New beginnings, new blog. This semester, I have been assigned to a new team and hopefully we will be successful in completing our goal resulting in a fantastic animation. We don't currently have a group name and all that since we basically have to start from square one. Since we were generally at a loss of really what name we had to come up with, I suggested we each come up with at least 3 names for everyone in Facebook. So far, I have came up with Four Alive studios, Spartan Studios, Media Mash Studios.
For our task, we are commissioned by autonomic arts to produce a 1-2minute film/teaser that features children with special needs and how they react/communicate/make sense of things in this world that they live in. The main character of this animation would be Auton, who is autistic and his friend, Derrie.
Since we have to animate a kid who is autistic and have special needs, we will obviously need to research quite a bit on autism and other conditions. The following is a summary of things I had learnt through research.
1. Autism usually manifests itself during a child's developing ages
2. It is a life long development disease that affects the person's communicating prowess
3. Metaphors, body language, facial expressions, jokes are usually lost on people with autism
4. Autistic people often love routine (though that is not the case for everyone), and therefore be resistant to change, and be attached to objects.
5. Autistic people may have sensory issues pertaining to sounds/noises, light. smells, etc.
6. Autistic people may have trouble relating to other people, and therefore not often have a social life.
7. Autistic people do not look any different from most people, therefore they have been mistaken for being stupid/misbehaving 'brats'.
8. They tend to avoid eye contact
9. Autistic people are not disabled physically
10. Autistic people usually have a few varied obsessions with certain items. For example, trains, computers, history dates, etc.
We are currently waiting for the script for the animation, and the character bios from our client, and on Thursday, after Deepavali, we will reconvene on the script that we will choose and from there get to work.
